Infants
Who is considered an infant?
An infant is a child who has not reached their 2nd birthday at any point during the journey.
What are the minimum age requirements for infants to travel?
- Newborn, less than 48 hours old, can only be accepted in an Incubator as a MEDA case and escorted by a doctor.
- Infants 48 hours to 7 days old may travel only if a medical certificate confirms they are fit to fly and were not born prematurely.
- Premature infants require a certified statement from a qualified obstetrician confirming they are healthy and able to travel.
How many infants can travel with one adult?
Only one (1) infant per accompanying adult (aged 16 years or older) is permitted.
Can passengers requiring mobility assistance accompany an infant?
No. Passengers requiring mobility assistance (wheelchair users or those using walking aids) cannot act as the accompanying adult for an infant.
What documents are required for infants?
Parents/guardians must carry:
- Infant’s identification documents
- Any required travel documents for the destination (e.g. passport, visa)
How do infants travel on board?
- Infants may travel only on the lap of their parent or guardian.
- Parents/guardians may carry formula and/or breast milk up to 6 kg in cabin baggage, subject to standard security inspections.
Is there a limit to the number of infants per flight?
Yes. The number of infants permitted depends on the availability of oxygen masks and infant safety belts on board.
What happens if an infant turns 2 years old during travel?
A separate seat must be booked at the applicable Child Fare for all flight segments after the 2nd birthday. Use of a car-type safety seat is optional in this case.
Can an infant travel in their own seat?
Yes. If preferred:
- A discounted Child Fare ticket (APT taxes excluded) must be purchased
- The adult must provide an approved car-type safety seat
- The infant ticket must also be issued, if available.
Where are infant seats NOT permitted?
They are not allowed:
- In aisle seats
- In emergency exit rows
- Directly in front of or behind an exit row.
Children and unaccompanied minors
Who can use the unaccompanied minor service?
Children aged 5 to 12 years traveling alone.
Are children under 5 accepted as UMNR?
No. Children under 5 must travel with an adult.
Are children who require mobility assistance accepted as unaccompanied minors?
As a general rule, children requiring WCHC / WCHR / WCHS assistance are not accepted as UMNR.
Are prepaid UMNR services refundable?
Yes, UMNR service is refundable.
