Infant

An infant is defined as a child who has not reached their 2nd birthday at any point during their journey.

Acceptance & limitation rules

  • Infants aged between 48 hours and 7 days may travel, provided the parent or guardian presents a medical certificate confirming that the infant is fit to fly and was not born prematurely.
  • For premature infants, a certified statement from a qualified obstetrician is required, confirming the infant is in good health and able to travel. Newborn, less than 48 hours old, can only be accepted in an Incubator as a MEDA case and escorted by a doctor.
  • A maximum of one (1) infant per accompanying adult (16 years of age or older) is permitted.
  • Passengers requiring mobility assistance (e.g., wheelchair users, passengers using walking aids) cannot act as the accompanying adult for an infant.
  • Parents/guardians must ensure they carry the infant’s identification documents and any travel documents required for the destination (e.g., passport, visa).
  • Infants may travel only on the lap of their parent or guardian. Parents/guardians may carry formula and/or breast milk in cabin baggage up to 6 kg, subject to standard security inspections at checkpoints.
  • The number of infants permitted on each aircraft depends on the availability of oxygen masks and infant safety belts on board. Αccordingly, the status of the SSR INF (e.g., HK or UC), which is automatically added to the booking, is determined by whether the maximum allowed number of infants on the flight has been reached.

Fare rules

  • Infant Fare applies to infants travelling on the accompanying adult’s lap.
  • If an infant reaches 2 years of age during travel, you must ensure that a separate seat is booked at the applicable Child Fare for all flight segments operated after the child’s second birthday. In this scenario, using a car-type safety seat is optional.
  • If an adult prefers the infant to travel in their own seat (in line with approved safety standards), a discounted Child Fare ticket must be purchased (APT taxes excluded), along with the infant ticket, if available. In this case, the accompanying adult must provide an approved car-type safety seat that meets international aviation safety standards (see detailed information in Car-type infant seat section).
  • “Add infant procedure” will be processed within the original GDS PNR. There is no need to create a new booking.

Car-type infant seat

Infant seats approved for use in the aircraft, on the basis of the technical standard, should hold:

  • UN Standard ECE R44-04 (or 03), or ECE R129 bearing the respective ‘ECE R’ label and
  • German ‘Qualification Procedure for Child Restraint Systems for Use in Aircraft’ (TÜV/958-01/2001) bearing the label ‘For Use in Aircraft’;
Or
  • Other technical standard acceptable to the competent authority. The child seat should hold a qualification sign that it can be used in the aircraft.

Requirements

  • Infant/child seats may be used for passengers up to 12 years of age.
  • The maximum allowable weight for the child is 27 kg.
  • The base of the seat must not exceed 40 cm (15.7 in) x 40 cm (15.7 in) to ensure safe application/compatibility on all cabin seats.
  • The seat must include integrated shoulder harnesses for the child.
  • The seat’s design must allow for secure attachment using the aircraft seat belt and must not obstruct the recline of the seat in front.
  • The seat must be properly secured before departure and remain fastened for the entire flight, including takeoff, landing, and turbulence.

Placement

  • Infant/child seats must be mounted in a dedicated, unoccupied aircraft seat and cannot be used on an adult’s lap.
  • The approved car-type infant seat must remain securely attached to the aircraft seat for the duration of the flight, unless it is not in use and is being stored as carry-on baggage in accordance with cabin storage regulations.

Infant seats must not be placed:

  • In an aisle seat.
  • In an emergency exit row.
  • In a row immediately in front of or immediately behind the exit row.

Children travelling alone (UMNR)

Our Unaccompanied Child service allows minors aged between 5 and 12 to travel safely when in certain circumstances are not accompanied by their parents/guardians.

The escort for a child can be arranged while booking a child fare ticket through the GDS.

Supervision and handling of unaccompanied minors

Children traveling alone are escorted by our Airport Staff and handed over directly to our Cabin Crew on board.

Children are:
  • Pre-boarded to ensure comfort and proper handover.
  • Assigned a suitable seat that allows continuous supervision by the cabin crew.
  • Supervised by ground staff at arrival until they are safely handed over to the designated adult listed in the OSI.

Reservation guidelines

To ensure proper supervision and safety, reservations for unaccompanied minors (UMNR) are accepted on a priority basis as there is a limited number of UMNRs permitted per flight.

UMNR service – How it works

Before the flight:

Before booking a reservation for a child traveling alone, please ensure that you have reviewed all regulations and legal requirements for the countries of departure, transit, and arrival. It is your responsibility to confirm that the child has all required travel documents, including any country-specific authorizations, and to verify that these documents are valid for the entire journey.

As noted above ensure two OSI entries to the PNR:
  • An OSI with code EOD (Escort on Departure) containing the full name, the relation and telephone number of the person accompanying the child at departure.
  • A second OSI with code EOA (Escort on Arrival) with the same details for the person who will receive the child upon arrival.

At both departure and arrival airports, the designated accompanying adult must present valid proof of identity.

Make sure to book the child’s ticket through the GDS by requesting the the UMNR service, which is offered on:

  1. travelport GDS (1G, 1V, 1P),
  2. Sabre GDS,
  3. Amadeus GDS,
  4. and via the AEGEAN / Olympic Air Farelogix booking tool.

Key notes for procedure

The free text flow of UMNR special service request is restricted to format as described below:

Example: 8 YRS OR UM8

  • Free flow text must start with unaccompanied minor access code UM followed by passenger age.
  • In case of AEGEAN Marketing /XX Operating SR UMNR is restricted.

Please download and fill out the "Declaration of parent/guardian” form before handing over the unaccompanied minor to AEGEAN staff at the airport of departure. 3 copies should be printed for each flight and for each child.

At the airport:

Passengers need to allow for additional time to complete documentation- at least an hour and a half before the flight departure. 3 copies of the "Declaration form" must be presented at the airport check-in counter on the day of departure for signing. These copies must remain with the child during the flight.

Additional documentation:

  • Proof of the child’s age and identity:
    • passport,
    • identity card,
    • birth certificate,
    • health certificate.
  • Parent/guardian documentation:
    • valid passport,
    • valid identity card.

Adults picking up the unaccompanied minor should also show a passport or a government-issued photo ID.

Document verification & check-in support

At Athens International Airport (ATH) and Thessaloniki Airport (SKG), dedicated check-in counters for special services/UMNRs are available. Travel agents should advise guardians to proceed directly to these service points for faster processing.

AEGEAN Airport staff will verify all identification documents, ensure that complete contact details are provided on the Unaccompanied Minor Declaration Form, and supply the child with a UMNR travel envelope containing all required documents for the journey.

Escort through airport processes

AEGEAN Airport staff will meet the child at the check-in counter, provide continuous UMNR escort service, and guide them through:
  • Airport security screening
  • Departure gate procedures
  • Official handover to Cabin Crew
The accompanying adult must remain at the airport until notified by airport staff that the flight has departed.

Inflight experience

Once on board, children traveling alone are met by our Cabin Crew, who will:
  • Assist with seat settling
  • Manage and stow cabin baggage
  • Provide comfort and support throughout the flight
The option to select the child's seat is available for children travelling alone. In any case, AEGEAN will make sure that the child is seated so as to facilitate Cabin crew’s supervision.

For a pleasant flight and to keep children entertained, Aegean Junior Pilots activities are available to download and print before the flight.

AEGEAN offers meals for children on medium and long-haul international flights. A children's meal can be selected during booking or later via "My booking" under "special meals", up to 24 hours before the flight. Alternatively, the standard meal will be served.

Upon arrival:

After landing, Airport staff will escort the child through:
  • Arrivals procedures
  • Baggage claim
  • Final handover to the authorized pickup adult, after ID verification (matching the details provided at booking).

Connecting flights:

When the flight includes a transfer, the child remains continuously supervised by AEGEAN Airport staff until escorted to the next departure gate.

  • During long layovers, the child will be escorted to an AEGEAN airport lounge (subject to availability).
  • For overnight transfers without an operating lounge, parental/guardian arrangements are required.

Irregular operations (delays, cancellations, schedule changes)

AEGEAN will immediately contact the adults listed in the UM Declaration form and arrange alternative flight solutions as needed.
