Wheelchair’s Categories

In order to provide wheelchair assistance on behalf of the passenger, you must request it in the booking (PNR) through your reservations system.
There are three categories of wheelchair passengers:
  • WCHR: Passengers who can walk up and down stairs and move about in an aircraft cabin, but who require a wheelchair or other assistance for movement between the aircraft and the terminal, in the terminal and between arrival and departure points on the land side of the terminal.
  • WCHS: Passengers who cannot walk up or down stairs, but who can move about in an aircraft cabin, and require a wheelchair to move between the aircraft and the terminal, in the terminal and between arrival and departure points on the land side of the terminal.
  • WCHC: This category covers a wide range of passengers. It includes those who are completely immobile, those who can move about only with the help of a wheelchair or any other means and those who require assistance at all times from arrival at the airport to being seated on the aircraft or if necessary in a special seat fitted to their specific needs, and the same process for disembarkation on arrival. This category also includes passengers with a disability only affecting the lower limbs who require assistance to embark and disembark and to move inside the aircraft cabin, but who are otherwise self-sufficient and can move about independently in their own wheelchair at the airport.

Note: specifying the level of autonomy at the time of booking will avoid situations where inappropriate assistance may be offered

Wheelchair Request Instructions

Own wheelchair
  • WCMP: Manual wheelchair
  • WCBD: Dry battery wheelchair
  • WCLB: Lithium-ion battery wheelchair

In order for WCMP, WCBD or WCLB  to be confirmed, it is mandatory to insert an SR with the wheelchair type (for example WCHC), otherwise the SR will not be confirmed.

There are two types of batteries’ wheelchairs:

Wheelchairs with non-spillable (dry) batteries &
Wheelchairs with spillable (wet batteries)

Attention: Wheelchairs with spillable batteries are not accepted for carriage.

Note: Aegean Airlines accepts 2 wheelchairs of each type (WCHR/WCHS/WCHC), 6 in total per flight. We can exceptionally accept up to 8 WCHC and/or WCHR/S but only in a Group booking.

Acceptance:

Wheelchairs with non-spillable batteries are accepted, and the following packing rules apply:

The battery must be disconnected.

The battery terminals must be insulated to prevent accidental short circuits.

The battery must be securely attached to the wheelchair.

Wheelchair provision request

For wheelchair to be approved, before the start of the passenger’s journey, you must insert an SSR into the booking, using the NN status and choosing the appropriate abbreviation depending on the passenger's needs/request (WCHR/WCHS/WCHC) and by indicating the reason for the requested. Aegean will respond according to the SSR status (HK or UC), accompanied, if required, by a corresponding SSR which will contain the correct information. If you haven’t followed these instructions when you created the PNR, you should insert a new SSR. Aegean will then follow the same procedure to respond to you.

In order for WCMP, WCBD or WCLB  to be confirmed, it is also mandatory to insert also the SR with the wheelchair type (for example WCHC), otherwise the SR will not be confirmed.

In case of passenger’s own wheelchair, if there is no confirmation for WCH* or it is UC or HN, SR WCMP/WCBD will not be confirmed.

Please note that the response to the SSR status (HK or UC) is also dependent on the number of wheelchair types (WCHR/WCHS/WCHC) already booked from the fixed quotas set per flight.
