Key information for pet transportation
General rules
- Each passenger can travel with only one (1) pet (cat or dog) in cabin, with max permitted weight for a pet (incl container) eight (8) kilos.
- Passengers travelling with infants cannot carry a pet in the cabin of the aircraft.
- A Live Animal Acceptance Checklist must be completed and signed at the AEGEAN's check-in counter.
- Bookings for pets are accepted on a priority basis as there is a limited number of pets/animals per flight.
- Pets must be clean, healthy, harmless, odorless, not pregnant, not sedated and not annoying for other passengers.
- With the exception of specific breeds, which apply to both cabin and AVIH, only cats and dogs (including guide dogs – see ‘Service animals’ below) can travel with you.
Weight, size & carrier
Weight & size restrictions
- Soft-sided pet carrier case for A320 family: 55cm x 40cm x 23cm DH8-100 & ATR42 / ATR72 40cm x 25cm x 25cm. The space under the front seat may vary depending on the aircraft type, hard-sided carriers may not fit on all aircraft.
- Pets (cats or dogs) exceeding 8 kg total weight (animal + container) must be transported exclusively in the aircraft hold.
- The total weight of the AVIH (including the container/box) must not exceed 50 kg.
- Only dogs and cats are accepted for carriage in the hold of Airbus 320, 321, ATR 42-600 and ATR 72-600 aircraft. No other animal species are permitted.
Connection & transfer rules
- Pets cannot be accepted for transport in the hold if the connecting time exceeds 3 hours.
Multiple pets

If a passenger travels with more than one pet in the cabin, the animals must:
- Be of the same species,
- Be familiar with each other,
- Travel in the same approved container,
- Not exceed 8 kg total (animals + container).
- Be of the same species,
- The maximum number of pet/animals which may accompany the owner or an authorized person during a single flight shall not exceed five (5) (including other hold items such as baggage and special equipment). The maximum number of pets/animals per container is three (3), all having the same date of birth.
Not accepted for transport
- Animals intended for laboratory or scientific purposes are not accepted for carriage.
Carrier case requirements
- The container must allow the pet to stand, turn, and lie down naturally.
- Passengers must provide an approved pet container/box.
- It must be ventilated on at least four (4) sides.
- Door hinge and locking pins must secure at minimum 1.6 cm engagement.
- The container must be leak-proof, and the pet must remain inside throughout the flight.
- Owners must ensure adequate food and water for the entire journey, including transfer times.
- For cabin-accepted pets (≤8kg), the container must fit under the seat in front of the passenger.
- Pets may enter lounges but must remain inside their container while waiting for their next flight.
Booking & charges
Request procedure (domestic & international routes)
For GDS
To request pet in cabin (PETC) carriage, you must:-
Insert the appropriate SSR entry in the booking before ticketing and prior to passenger travel.

- Type of pet (cat or dog)
- Total weight (animal + container)
- Container dimensions

AEGEAN / Olympic Air will respond to the SSR request with:
- HK (confirmed) or
- UC (unable to confirm)

- If the SSR was submitted incorrectly, you must:
- Delete the original SSR
- Reinsert a new, correct SSR
- AEGEAN / Olympic Air will then reprocess and reply following the standard procedure.
For F1

Notes
- The above prices apply to GDS bookings, online bookings, AEGEAN Call Center bookings and to AEGEAN and Olympic Air operated flights only.
- Prices also apply for AEGEAN and Olympic Air operated flights with the LH group (Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss).
- The charges apply per container, regardless of the number of pets included.
- Bookings through the AEGEAN call center incur a service fee of €8 per passenger. Bookings are accepted up to 2 hours before flight departure.
- Re-routing and re-issue is applicable if the relevant service is available.
- Pet/animal bookings are refundable.
- Trained service animals (guide dogs) are accepted free of charge. Agents must notify AEGEAN / Olympic Air before completing the booking and ensure that the required documentation/certification for the service animal is provided.
Health & check-in
Health condition
- Pets must be minimum 12 weeks old, with a valid anti-rabies vaccination.
- The anti-rabies re-vaccination is required every one, two or three years, depending on the vaccine duration.
- It must be valid and in effect when travelling (a minimum of 21 days since last shot).
- The 21-day restriction does not apply if the new vaccination was administered before the expiration of the last one.
- For a vaccination to be considered valid, it must be administered after the microchip implantation. In practice, the pet must be at least 105 days old to be accepted for transportation.
Veterinary declaration
Check-in & documentation requirements
- At ATH (Athens International Airport) – El. Venizelos and SKG (Thessaloniki Airport) – Makedonia, dedicated check-in counters are available for passengers traveling with pets.
- Regardless of departure airport, all pets must be presented at a check-in counter for clearance at least 1 hour prior to scheduled departure.
- Pet Health Book/Passport must be physically presented for validation. The pet must be microchipped according to regulations.
- For domestic travel within Greece, the Gov.gr electronic Health Book (or printed copy) is accepted, provided the microchip date is clearly indicated.
- If the pet is not accompanied by its legal owner, a written authorization/declaration from the owner is mandatory.
- Although online and mobile check-in are available, boarding passes for passengers traveling with pets must be collected at the airport counter.
International & route rules
Traveling abroad
- Transportation of pets is subject to all applicable Government regulations for the import, export, and transit of live animals.
- Requirements vary by country; therefore, it is mandatory that passengers/pet owners consult the competent national authorities (typically the Ministry of Food and Animal Welfare or equivalent) of the destination country for up-to-date rules, documentation, and additional entry conditions.

Route restrictions
- United Arab Emirates (UAE – Dubai / Abu Dhabi)
- Transport of dogs and cats NOT permitted in cabin or hold.
- Only accepted as cargo.
- United Kingdom (UK)
- To the UK:
- Transport is allowed only to London Heathrow (LHR) and only as cargo.
- From the UK:
- Dogs and cats permitted in cabin or hold,
- Except London Gatwick (LGW), where only cargo transport is allowed.
- To the UK:
- Each dog with cropped ears imported into Ireland—whether transported as cargo, PETC (Pet in Cabin), or AVIH (Animal in Hold)—must hold an official import license issued by the Animal Welfare Division, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.
- In addition, every dog with cropped ears entering Ireland must be accompanied by the original veterinary certificate confirming the medical/veterinary reason for the ear-cropping procedure, signed by a licensed veterinarian and bearing the official veterinary practice stamp.
- For international travel, pet owners are required to present a valid EU Pet Passport or other accepted pet travel document as defined by the destination authority.
- It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that all import documentation, veterinary certificates, and regulatory requirements for pet entry are complete and compliant with the rules of the destination country.
Service animals
Accepted service dogs
- AEGEAN accepts two (2) types of dogs as service animals in the aircraft cabin:
- Trained service dogs: including seeing-eye dogs (guide dogs for visually impaired passengers), hearing-aid dogs (for passengers with impaired hearing) and trained service dogs assisting passengers with medical or developmental conditions (e.g., epilepsy, autism) are accepted for travel.
Certification requirements
- All trained service dogs must hold valid certification issued by a recognized authority. Accepted organizations include:
- Assistance Dogs International (ADI)
- International Guide Dog Federation (IGDF)
- European Guide Dog Federation (EGDF)
- Any nationally certified Guide Dog School
- Rescue dogs: Dogs trained to assist rescue workers, as well as dogs that are in the middle of or have completed their training and are escorted by their trainer for familiarization purposes (upon request). In this case, documentation for both the trained dog and the trainer is required.
Requirements for service dogs

Service dogs can be booked via GDS, online through AEGEAN’s official digital channels or via the AEGEAN Call Center and must be requested at least 48 hours before the flight’s scheduled departure.
For GDS: The service must be booked and confirmed for a service dog as SR SVAN (not PETC).
For F1: From Special Services, in the SSR field select SSR CODE SVAN. - Service animals are carried free of charge.
- One (1) service animal is permitted in-cabin; a second may travel in the hold in an approved container.
- The passenger must provide an appropriate container for hold carriage.
- The service dog must fit between the passenger’s legs and may not move freely in the cabin.
- The dog must not pose safety risks or disrupt cabin service.
- All general pet/animal transport requirements apply to service dogs.
- Transport of service dogs to the UK is permitted only on flights to London Heathrow (LHR).
